Optimising your sites for search engines is an ongoing task: but we can take the headache out of the process by focussing on immediate delivery of results. There are tips and tricks which mean a small amount of time and effort in the right places can result in a big improvement in your site's search engine positioning. This knowledge will remain with your organisation enabling you to manage the process yourself in the future.

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation can be applied to a new or existing site - we have two processes for these different scenarios.

SEO for Existing Sites

1) Basic Analysis & Strategy

We analyse the website(s) to understand the scale of any existing problems, the search market opportunity and general SEO strategy.

DELIVERABLE:

  A brief report summarising the main issues and opportunities.

2) Full SEO Analysis & Solutions

We examine the existing site for a number of SEO factors, using various tools and methods;

  • Benchmarking: Current performance of the site in search engines;
  • Competitive analysis: analysis of competitors or search market leaders in subject area.
  • Indexing: How many pages are currently indexed by the Search Engines; Are there any barriers to indexing such as use of frames, javascript, flash, images.
  • Tech factors; domains names and hosting issues, parameters in urls, sessions and other factors.
  • Meta tags: does the site make use of meta tags correctly; are they optimised;
  • Keywords being used: how well targeted are theses, how are they distributed and used throughout the site.
  • Site content: is the site content structure suitable for SE's. Is there any content missing or hidden that should be made available to SE's.
  • Link architecture: Is the internal linking structure suitable and optimised for performance on SE's.
  • Homepage maximisation: the homepage has extra significance in SEO: is the homepage optimised sufficiently.
  • Link Popularity: Does the site have sufficient link popularity; does it need it? What is competitors linkpop?

Each of these is analysed looking for quick wins and opportunities as well as overall SEO health. We then document for these areas exactly what needs to be done; the goal being to maximise the SEO performance of the site in the quickest, most cost effective way.

DELIVERABLE:

 A report provided with a prioritised order of actions to fully optimise the site.


SEO for New Sites

Building in SEO factors from scratch, even into the content development plans and site concept will realise a much higher level of performance in generating free traffic from search engines than retro-fitting and is recommended wherever possible.

Leaving SEO until after design and launch represents an immediate lost opportunity which could be very serious. It's also much more cost-effective to build SEO factors in when a site is being design and built.

1) SEO Strategy

Understanding the proposed site: Content, Technology, business model. Researching the current search market potential for the specific business area; look at competition and opportunity areas etc. Produce a strategy report based on the above factors. The most critical aspect of SEO is defining the most appropriate strategy to deliver results cost effectively. As such I charge a premium for this stage.

2) Keyword Research

This stage identifies, based on the strategy, the range of keywords that will drive traffic to the site from search engines and involves using keyword analysis tools extensively.

These keywords are ordered by various means to show a priority, which are the most important keywords etc.

3) SEO Specification

This stage involves seeing early designs and making sure they are going to be suitable for optimisation, and making recommendations quickly as to changes that need to be made.

It can extend to a page-by-page SEO Specification to build in SEO into each page or template, depending on the project, budget and business goals. It covers:

  • Competitive analysis: analysis of competitors or search market leaders in subject area.
  • Indexing: How to avoid or work around indexing barriers to indexing such as use of frames, javascript, flash, images.
  • Tech factors; What technology is to be used to build the site? Domains names and hosting issues, parameters in urls, sessions and other factors.
  • Meta tags: Setting out formulas and specific keywords for Meta tags
  • Keywords: From keyword report - specify how and where the site targets these keywords
  • Site content: is the proposed site content structure suitable for SE's. Is there any potentially valuable content missing or hidden that could be made available to SE's.
  • Link architecture: Specify the optimal linking structure for performance on SE's.
  • Homepage maximisation: the homepage has extra significance in SEO: Specify \how to get maximum value from the homepage.
  • Link Popularity: Does the site have sufficient link popularity; does it need it? What is competitors linkpop.
